SHILLONG: Just a few days prior to Meghalaya election which is scheduled to take place on 27th February, state’s former Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh breathes his last on 20th of February, Monday. 

As per the reports, Lyngdoh died after suffering a heart attack while attending an election meeting. He was rushed to the hospital, however, the doctors couldn’t save him. 

As per sources, the UDP candidate was admitted in the Bethany hospital of Shillong. The veteran politician of the state was 69 years old, and was planning to contest on a UDP ticket this time.

Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K Sangma grieved on the demise and tweeted regarding the same. The CM wrote, ‘Saddened by the sudden demise of former Minister and Senior Politician of Meghalaya, Shri HDR Lyngdoh. Shri Lyngdoh serve the state in different capacities over the years and was a dedicated leader to the people. His demise is a great loss to Meghalaya. May his soul rest in peace’.

Notably, the deceased was a member and candidate of United Democratic Party (UDP), from Sohiong assembly in East Khasi hills. Lyngdoh ruled as the Home Minister during the Congress government, headed by Dr Mukul Sangma. He gained victory as a MLA from Sohiong in the year 1988.

He won on Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) ticket and carried on with the position until 1998. Further, he was defeated by RS Lyngdoh of UDP but came back as an MDC on a Congress ticket in 1999. The sudden death of the politician evoked shocks in the political world of Meghalaya. He was defeated in the polls of 2018.

Once again in 2003, Lyngdoh gained victory as Congress member, and continued ruling the position until 2018. The 60 seats of Meghalaya is scheduled to go single phase polls on 27th of February.
