Guwahati: The Union Government's National Education Policy seems to have found a staunch supporter in the Government of Meghalaya, which wants to be the first state to implement the new policy.

As per the state's chief minister, Conrad K Sangma, a task force will be constituted by the State Government to implement the tenets of the new policy in the state to take it forward.

"Congratulated our Hon'ble Union Minister for Education Sh.DrRPNishank Ji for the National Education Policy. #Meghalaya will be the 1st State to implement the #education policy. A Task Force will be constituted to take it forward in our State", Sangma announced in a tweet earlier in the day.

The National Education Policy 2020 which was approved by the Union Cabinet of India on 29 July 2020 outlines the vision of India's new education system. The new policy replaces the previous National Policy on Education, 1986.

As per Conrad Sangma, the Union Education Minister has also assured to look into the matter to restore the recognition of the B.Ed College at Rongkhon in Tura by the National Council for Teacher Education

"Thank the Hon'ble Union Minister for Education Dr. R P Nishank Ji for assuring to look into the matter to restore the recognition of the BEd. College at Rongkhon, #Tura by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE)", Sangma wrote.

The recognition of the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) course at the College of Teacher Education in Rongkhon, Tura, was withdrawn by the National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE) for its failure to comply with several guidelines. This has caused the locals to be up in arms as it is the oldest and only government-run institute providing this course in the entire Garo Hills region.
