Shillong: The General Executive Council (UDP) of the United Democratic Party (UDP) on Wednesday unanimously elected Metbah Lyngdoh as the president of the party. Metbah Lyngdoh, Paul Lyngdoh and Bindo Lanong featured as the probable’s for the coveted post of the biggest regional party in the State, before the constituted nomination committee narrowed down on the name of the three time legislator from Mairang.
Going by the ambience in the General Executive Council meeting, what was obvious was the circumspect lobbying, before the final announcement was made by the Chairman of the nomination committee, Moonlight Pariat. Soon after Nomination Committee Chairman announced that Metbah Lyngdoh is the choice to be the president, there was no word of dissent.
The probables for the post have also been accommodated in the party ranks. Bindo M Lanong has been made the UDP chief advisor, Paul Lyngdoh as the working president along with six other party functionaries and Jemino Mawthoh retains the General Secretary post.
In course of his address to the party functionaries, Metbah Lyngdoh categorically stated that it will be difficult to fill the void left by the late Dr Donkupar Roy. “However, I accept you’re your choice with humility and I will build the party by taking everyone on board.”
Claiming that he has never make a quest for the post, Metbah Lyngdoh stated that it is only after consultations and persuasions that he felt that should accept the proposal. He said, “I’ll take everyone all along and don’t play any internal politics within the party that strives to work for the regional aspirations of the people”.
He cited the Shella constituency by-election as a challenge that all the party functionaries should work hard.
