Shillong: For the first time in the history of sports Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), X1 International Championship, a national event was sanctioned by MMA India on Friday at the Laban SC Indoor Stadium in Shillong.

Speaking to the media, MMA organizers said, “We are hosting the first Shillong cage fighting championship today. We have invited fighters from all parts of the country to showcase their talents. We have invited almost 50 fighters participating in the MMA event. They will be competing with the fighters from Meghalaya and Northeast. These mixed martial arts are a professional sport which would make each and every player from NE a professional.”

The organizers also mentioned that we have both and male and female categories in the event. They would all compete with each other in all the respective weight categories.

“We also want to popularize mixed martial arts fight in Shillong with rest of the country. We believe that proper infrastructure and training would bring out the athletes from this part of the region. Each of the NE players is a natural fighter, but what we require is more exposure in such events in the future,” claimed the organizers.

It may be mentioned that Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a full-contact combat sport that allows striking and grappling, both standing and on the ground, using techniques from other combat sports and martial arts.
