Congress district units submit memoranda to President of India

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), along with the other State units of the Indian National Congress, participated in the party's nationwide 'Dharna against Unprecedented Rise in Petrol and Diesel prices and Excise Duty' on Monday. The MPCC dharna in collaboration with the Shillong City Congress Committee (SCCC) and the East Khasi Hills District Congress Committee (EKHDCC), was organized in the Congress Bhawan here.

The programme was led by MPCC working president James S Lyngdoh along with MLA and SCCC president Charles Pyngrope as well as EKHDCC president Kennedy C Khyriem. It was attended by members of party functionaries including the units of the Mahila, Youth, NSUI and social media.

In his Chairman's address, MPCC working president Lyngdoh wondered as to "why the Government of India has been steadily increasing the petrol and diesel prices in order to earn Excise Duty when in the international market, the price of 'Crude' has been declining every day". He condemned the government's action in this regard and said that it should have been done especially when the people of India are already suffering economically due to COVID-19 lockdown. Instead of giving help to the people, the Central Government's act in this regard is adversely affecting the public, he said.

At the end of the programme a memorandum was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills, Shillong for onward communication to the President of India.

Lyngdoh further informed that all the DCCs (District Congress Committees) across the State staged the 'Dharna' (demonstration) in front of their DCC offices during the day and also handed over similar memoranda to the respective DCs.
