SHILLONG: Poll-related violence broke out in the West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya on Tuesday and led to the injury of multiple people and the apprehension of more than 100 people.

The clash happened between the workers of the Trinamool Congress party and those of the National People's Party. The incident was reported from the Charbatapara village which falls under the Phulbari Assembly Constituency under the West Garo Hills district. The members of the Trinamool Congress party alleged that they were taking part in an election-related meeting in the Nozrul Hoque at about 10:30 PM when they were attacked by members of the ruling National People's Party.

SG Estamur Mominin the former NPP MLA who shifted to the TMC recently visited the village at about 9 PM to take part in a feast organised in the home premises of Nozrul Hoque. That was when a group of NPP members attacked the TMC supporters.

"A huge procession of NPP workers started pelting stones and bricks targeting the house where I was having a party meeting. Four of the party workers were injured, while one of them Nozrul Hoque was taken to Goalpara as referred by the Phulbari Hospital since he was seriously injured in the attack," alleged SG Estamur Mominin.

Strongly condemning the incident, he mentioned, "It was orchestrated by the NPP workers. I learned that the Shyamnagar MDC instigated it. I request the ECI to conduct a proper inquiry to ascertain the truth." The injured Nozrul Hoque too mentioned that the group of NPP supporters attacked them and destroyed property at his place.

One Nozim Hussain lodged an FIR regarding the incident at the Phulbari Police Station. The authorities had identified more than 100 people in relation to the incident. The police apprehended 131 people on Wednesday in relation to the incident to prevent any repetition during the election days.
