Shillong: Although there are reports that a committee constituted by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has recommended the introduction of the Inner Line Permit in Assam, the influential North East Students Organisation (neso) is still sceptical about it.

This was evident from the words of the chairman of neso Samuel Jyrwa during an interview with The Sentinel on Tuesday where he stated that his reaction will come only when the Centre fulfill our demands. “Since it’s inception, neso has been demanding the introduction of ilp in all the sister States. Manipur has got it and it is now time for Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura”, stated Jyrwa.

Asked on whether the student body sees a silver lining in the cloud following the reported recommendation, the neso chairman said, “We will talk about the gold and silver linings if ilp is introduced in the rest of the States of the region”.

However, he iterated that Assam is under threat from the unregulated influx of illegal migrants and the ilp and other protective mechanisms will greatly ease the existing scenario.

In Meghalaya, the demand for the ilp was so vociferous that the State legislature had to passed a unanimous decision to be placed before the Union Government on the collective decision. On Tuesday, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma along with his ministers landed in New Delhi to pursue the case with Union Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah. The State Cabinet along with other functionaries are already in full strength in the national capital, informed a source.
