SHILLONG: Meghalaya's performance in ensuring the citizens to get their Aadhar registration is abysmally low. Compared to the national percentage that is hovering around 90%, the State percentage stands at 43. 66 %. Only 14,69,467 citizens have registered for Aadhar till the month of February this year. Going by statistics available from the 11 districts of the State, East Garo Hills, South West Garo Hills and East Khasi Hills fared better in terms of percentage with a percentage of 58.45%, 49.5 % and 49.38 % respectively.
East Jaintia Hills with 25.52% is the district with the least registration followed by South Garo Hills with 28.21 % . The registration for Aadhar card in West Khasi Hills is 37.61 %, South West Khasi Hills 30 .63 %, Ri Bhoi district 37.65 %, West Jaintia Hills 40.95 %, North Garo Hills 41 .67 %, and West Garo Hills 46.60 %..
Sources involved in compiling the data cited varied reasons for the tardy registration by the citizens inspite of the awareness programme initiated by the government and other agencies.
The State government made it clear that that it has not made the registration of Aadhar compulsory. However, it stated that the residents of the state can avail beneficiary oriented schemes with Aadhar.
