SHILLONG: In recognition of his distinguished and meritorious record of service, Umesh Kumar Nayal, PPMG, DIG of FTR HQrs BSF Meghalaya has received the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service by President of India on the occasion of 72nd Republic Day.

Nayal joined the BSF as Assistant Commandant in 1986. During 1991 in Kupwara (J&K), he conducted many successful operations against militants and also sustained bullet/splinter injuries twice, but it didn't deter him from standing strong against militancy. In 1994, he was honoured with the ''President's Police Medal for Gallantry" for his conspicuous bravery and courage in eliminating five hardcore militants of HijbulMujahiddin. During 2000 to 2003 at Sopore in J&K, he carried out many successful operations against militants. For this, he was awarded the "President's Police Medal for Meritorious Service" in 2011. During his 34 years of service, the officer was awarded with 10 Director General's Commendation Rolls and 13 Inspector General's Commendation Cards.

Presently posted at the Frontier Headquarters BSF Meghalaya, his immaculate acumen has resulted in the surrendering of three hardcore cadres of the GNLA. He has also remained as Chief Nodal Intelligence Officer of Western theatre of BSF while posted at Force headquarters. He also worked as intelligence officer at Bikaner/Sriganganagar (Rajasthan) where he generated several strategic information about Pakistan, Khalistan militants and drug smugglers. In 2013, he succeeded in apprehending 86 naxals and motivating 75 others in Chhatishgarh to join the mainstream, stated a release.
