Shillong: The Meghalaya government has appointed Rebecca Vanessa Suchiang as the Chief Secretary of the state. She is an IAS officer of the 1989 batch and belongs to the Assam-Meghalaya cadre.

With this, Suchiang has become the first Khasi woman to be appointed as the Chief Secretary of Meghalaya. It is to be mentioned that she is currently the most senior IAS officer of Meghalaya.

Prior to this, Suchiang was working with the Union Finance Ministry as the Additional Secretary. On September 30, Suchiang will take charge as the Chief Secretary of Meghalaya, succeeding MS Rao. 

The current Chief Secretary, MS Rao, will retire on September 30.

After his retirement, Rao will serve as the Chief Commissioner of the State Public Service Delivery Commission. This is in accordance with the Meghalaya Right to Public Service Act, 2020. This information was provided in the official notification issued on Wednesday.

Rao was previously appointed as the Chief Secretary of the state in December 2019. He is an IAS officer of the 1987 batch and belonged to the Assam-Meghalaya cadre.

Rebecca Vanessa Suchiang was congratulated for her appointment by Opposition Chief, PT Sawkmie who said, "We feel proud for her and wish her all the best in the years to come."

Sawkmie also thanked the outgoing Chief Secretary MS Rao for his services and said, "You have proved yourself to be the best. The people of the state will remember you."
