Regional Democratic Alliance to meet Conrad K Sangma over charter of demands

SHILLONG: The Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA) has decided to seek the intervention of the State government into the issues related to the long-pending inter-State boundary dispute, railway line, and inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the alliance which comprises seven MLAs from the United Democratic Party (UDP) and two MLAs from the Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP). Both parties are part of the National People's Party-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government. After the meeting, UDP general secretary and former Nongthymmai legislator Jemino Mawthoh informed that a delegation of the RDA would take up these issues with the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday. "We want to ensure that the things move forward," he said.

Stating that the boundary dispute has been pending for decades, Mawthoh also highlighted a few recent unpleasant incidents that happened in some areas like Langpih along the inter-State boundary. He pointed out that though talks at the levels of the Chief Ministers and the Chief Secretaries of Assam and Meghalaya were held in the past yet no solution has been found. "Therefore, we want to pursue the matter," added Mawthoh.
