SHILLONG: BJP leaders have criticised the Trinamool Congress (TMC) politician and former cricketer Kirti Azad for his tweet regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's attire while he was in Meghalaya.

Azad had posted a picture of Prime Minister Modi along with a screenshot of a woman model sporting the same "multi-floral embroidered outfit" on an online store. He wrote alongside the image, "neither a man nor a woman. just someone who worships fashion."

The picture of Prime Minister Modi was taken during his most recent trip to Shillong, where he had gone to dedicate significant projects. He was photographed donning traditional Khasi garb.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, responded to Kirti Azad's post and expressed his disapproval on social media. He expressed his sadness at witnessing a well-known leader "mock" Meghalayan culture. He enquired from the TMC whether they shared the ideas of their party leader. Tweeted Sarma "It is heartbreaking to see how @KirtiAzaad is disrespecting Meghalayan culture and making fun of our indigenous garb. If TMC agrees with his viewpoints, they urgently need to say so. They won't be pardoned by the populace since their silence will be interpreted as tacit support."

Azad was highly criticized on Twitter by the BJP Scheduled Tribe Morcha for his comments. They demanded that an accusation be made against the TMC leader.

"You are disrespecting Tribal attire by saying that you are unsure whether this is Female or Male attire. You and your party have a proven history of pathological hatred towards Tribals. The case should be filed against you under SC / ST atrocity act for this uncouth remark," a Tweet read by BJP ST Morcha.

Azad justified his statements, saying he wasn't disparaging the PM but rather complimenting his "fashion statement." As Kirti tweeted, "I don't think the clothing is disrespectful; I adore it. I'm trying to say that our prime minister enjoys making style statements. never lets an opportunity pass."
