SHILLONG: The Meghalaya State unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is in turmoil after its North Shillong MLA, Sanbor Shullai demonstrated his open rebellion against the party's State president Earnest Mawrie.

"The party in the State now looks like a sinking ship," stated Shullai in his diatribe against the State party president, adding that many party workers in the districts left the party owing to the autocratic style of functioning of the party's State chief.

Shullai also alleged that the incumbent is behaving like a dictator. "We have informed the party in-charge of Meghalaya Dr S. Ao about the issues that need to be officially addressed at the earliest. These are issues apprised through written complaints," stated the three-time legislator. He further questioned the party president on ''issues that have affected the MDA coalition''.

The BJP is part of the MDA (Meghalaya Democratic Alliance) government headed by the NPP (National Peoples' Party). Of late, the State BJP has been consistently launching attacks against the State government, particularly on the alleged misappropriation of funds in the two District Councils in the State.

Defending the government, the BJP MLA dismissed the allegations as ''childish statements'' of the State BJP president.

Raising serious charges on the manner in which the State BJP president was elected, the BJP MLA said, ''It was done without our knowledge; now the time is ripe to remove him from the post.''

On this typical situation in the party, sources close to the BJP told The Sentinel that one side is armed with proofs of alleged corruption charges procured through RTI (Right To Information). On the other hand, both the MLAs are in the mood to pursue the case to its logical conclusion.
