Shillong: Seng Kut Snem was celebrated by the followers of the Khasi indigenous (traditional) faith with cogent reminders of the elders about the distinctive of the Khasi Pnar race that lies in the undiluted traditional faith, practices and cultural adherence.
Seng Kut Snem is celebrated to mark the 119 year of Seng khasi , an institution that was started by 16 traditional faith protagonist to deter the cultural and spiritual invasion under the British regime. Held at the Weiking ground in Shillong on Friday, the main speaker of the occasion, Synrop Kharshiing told the congregation that the uniqueness of the khasi race is through their faith that held the almighty, nature divine creation, the traditions and cultural practices. “These were under siege for more than a century ago and we are combating all annihilating forces to maintain our distinct identity through the wise teachings of our forefathers”, stated Kharshiing.
Stating that the khasi’s wisdom is as equal as any other community or races in the world, Kharshiing reflected on the taunts made in the historical past on traditional religious practices. “Remember, we are as good as any other races in the world, a reason that the 16 men started the movement to negate the vices that was attributed on us,” The Elder of the Seng Khasi added, “If Tirot Singh and Kiang Nangbah wage a war to save the colonial invasion, ours is solemn combat to carry on with our (khasi) indigenous faith, rituals, practices in the inherited way”.
The elder resonate the voices of tolerance of the keepers of the traditional religion with a vigor to preserve and protect the indigenous Khasi faith.
Earlier, prior to the congregation at Weiking ground, thousand of people took out a march from Madan Iewrynghep with tables depicting the Khasi traditions along with chants all along the way. Traditional cultural display that invoke god and appreciation to the myriads of natural creation followed in the evening.
