Shella by-poll: High percentage turnout recorded

Shillong: The by-elections to the Shella constituency witnessed a high turnout of 84.56 per cent on Monday. According to the State Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Frederick Roy Kharkongor, the highest polling was recorded at Wah-u-Tim (92.8%) and the lowest polling was at the MECL/MCCL polling station (47%).

The CEO informed that the polling was peaceful except for the seizure of 823 litres of alcohol. There are six contenders in the fray from the seat that was left vacant by the sudden death of Dr Donkupar Roy, the former Chief Minister, Speaker and president of the UDP. Counting of votes will be held at Sohra on October 24 and it is expected that the results will come out early.
