SHILLONG: Shillong commuters heaved a sigh of relief after two weeks of difficulties that stemmed from the strike by the cabbies across Meghalaya. The strike called by the 'Meghalaya Joint Action Committee of Commercial Vehicles' (MJACCV) was its way to put pressure on the government to reduce the price of fuel (petrol and diesel). It called off the stir on Wednesday after the government waived the tax on fuel price by Rs 5 beside the earlier rebate of Rs 2.
However, as cabbies hit the roads, there were numerous complaints that the commercial taxi drivers did not revert the price of the fare. The drivers reportedly stated that the fares post lockdown and fuel hike have remained the same even after the reversal. The reversal includes normal carrying of passengers without social distancing and the charging of the usual fares on shared taxis. The Sentinel solicited the opinion of the MJACCV chairman,W Jyrwa in this regard. He said that the drivers have been told to go back to the earlier rates. "All the drivers of the commercial taxis have been asked to comply with the notification of the State government", stated Jyrwa.
But,will the cabby drivers comply?
