SHILLONG: The state search and rescue team of the Fire and Emergency Service of the police on Monday retrieved all the three INSAS rifles which had been discarded and thrown in the Wah Umkhrah River from Umpohliew bridge.

Weapons and vehicle of the Mawkynroh police outpost were snatched during the August 15 protest against the alleged gunning down of former Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) leader Cheristerfield Thangkhiew. However, reports have claimed that an anonymous letter sent to a media house had indicated that the youths had dumped the weapons into the river from the Umpohliew Bridge, which falls under Jaiaw Laitdom.

During the search on Monday, traditional heads from both Jaiaw Laitdom and Mawlai Phudmawri were present, including the police. The traditional heads expressed relief that the weapons have finally been retrieved by the police. "At first we were not sure whether the letter was true or not but now it seems that there are still honest people in our State," they said.
