SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has said that after the demise of Dr Donkupar Roy, the government will soon hold a meeting to discuss on who should be the Speaker of the Assembly.

Speaking to reporters at a sideline of a function held in the city, Sangma said, “This matter will be taken up with the United Democratic Party (UDP) and also with our partners within the MDA coalition government.”

Stating that the UDP has expressed its desire to retain the seat of the Speaker in the Assembly, he said the matter will first be discussed with our partners within the government on this particular issue. The Chief Minister said that he cannot make any personal comments on this subject matter as it should be discussed with all the MDA partners along with leaders of UDP.

When asked on weather NPP will field any candidate in the by-election at Shella constituency, he said “Like I have said before. Dr Donkupar Roy was like a father to me. However at this point of time I cannot say anything as this issue has to be discussed first with party leaders of NPP at Shella.”

He also pointed out that what is most important is that the confidence of all the MDA partners are taken into consideration before any decision is made.

Conrad made this statement after leaders of the UDP has urged the partners within the government not to field any candidate in the by-election at Shella constituency as a mark of respect for former Speaker of the Assembly and president of UDP.
