SHILLONG: A Special session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly is proposed to be held on January 20, for ratification of the Constitution (126th Amendment) Bill, 2019.

The Bill relates to the extension of reservation of seats for the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes. The Bill was passed by both Houses of Parliament in December last year; and it has now to be ratified by State Assemblies before it is presented to the President for his assent.

While the ratification is expected to go through, the Opposition will used the opportunity to corner the government on a number of issues. “We will definitely take up issues confronting the State,” stated senior Congress leader Amapreen Lyngdoh said over phone. Other sources added that the Opposition will target Home Minister James K Sangma and PWD Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar.
