Speeding truck mows down 5 vendors on Shillong bypass

SHILLONG: A speeding lorry mowed down five vendors at Thangshalai along the Shillong bypass on Saturday morning. Of them, four women died on the spot. The male succumbed to his injuries on the way to Shillong Civil Hospital.

Quoting eyewitnesses, Superintendent of Police (City) Vivek Syiem said that the incident happened at around 8 am when a speeding truck hit a dumper before it ramped into the roadside vendors who were selling tea and vegetables. The truck driver escaped soon after the incident. The deceased have been identified as Balarihun Kharkongkor (27), Gracefully Nongbri (23)Banteibha Bina ( 20), Shantilang Nongbri (28) and Korbarsing Khardui (52). SP Syiem further said that the vehicle owner has been identified.

Woman murdered: A woman identified as J. Marak was found brutally murdered and beheaded by unknown miscreants outside her house at the Tikrikilla area in West Garo Hills. An FIR has been filed at the local police station. Details are awaited.
