SHILLONG: The State Congress on Wednesday continued its protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

The leaders of the State Congress party led by Dr. Mukul Sangma held a public meeting at the premises of the State Central Library where speakers spoke on the dangers of the CAA and lambasted the National People’s Party (NPP) for supporting it in the Parliament.

Leader of Opposition, Dr. Mukul Sangma said that the CAA has created a dangerous precedent for the future of the nation. He also said that when the Congress was in power, the party put a number of measures to ensure that there are provisions to protect every ethnic group in the region.

Dr. Sangma also said that the BJP and their partners are trying to create an impression that the people have accepted the amended Citizenship Act.

“It is only because of the NPP that people all over the country think that Meghalaya has also accepted the CAA,” he said.

The leader of Opposition also lambasted Chief Minister Conrad Sangma for making a U-turn on the resolution to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill before it was passed in the Parliament.

“The NPP MP from Tura voted in favour of the bill. Were the partners told that they (NPP) were changing their stand. Did the Chief Minister informed the NGOs who were signatories to the resolution,” Dr. Sangma asked.

The Opposition leader said that there is a need to question the Chief Minister on how he dared to cheat the people by voting in favour of the bill.
