SHILLONG: The meeting of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition could not come to a consensus on which party should take the post of the Assembly Speaker. It may be mentioned that the post fell vacant after the passing away of United Democratic Party (UDP) chief, Dr Donkupar Roy.

“We have decided to constitute a committee to look into the post of Speaker,” Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma said.

The committee will be headed by National People’s Party (NPP) leader and deputy chief minister, Prestone Tynsong.

The other members of the committee are AL Hek of the BJP, People’s Democratic Party’s, Banteidor Lyngdoh and Metbah Lyngdoh of the UDP.

The committee will have to come up with a name by September 4.

When asked if the pressure from the United Progressive Front (UPF) was the reason for formation of the committee, Conrad said that in democracy we are coalition and it is not fair on our part to be taken for granted. We have to respect that it is not fair on our part,” Conrad said. Meanwhile, lone KHNAM legislator, Adelbert Nongrum joined the UPF strengthening the MDA coalition. The MDA now has 40 MLAs.
