SHILLONG: Minister of State for Law and Justice, S. P. Singh Baghel has said that it has come to his notice that there are quite substantial number of POCSO cases and also cases filed under the Narcotics Acts in the state.

However, Baghel expressed his satisfaction that unlike Uttar Pradesh, the State he belongs to; Meghalaya has few instances of bank robberies, murder cases and dowry cases.

"But what I have seen is that there are quite a few instances cases filed under the Narcotics Act," the Minister of State said.

Baghel also expressed surprise over the absence of dowry cases in Meghalaya even as he added that in his life in Agra, there is no day where he does not come across cases of broken marriage or a runaway bride.

Baghel also added that for cases filed under the Narcotics Act, the Forensic Science Lab should be well equipped which could give findings quickly.

He also stated that the police need scientific evidence like DNA test, finger prints, narco test, lie detectors and if these are done the conviction rates will rise.

The Minister of State for Law and Justice also said that he was glad to hear that in the State, the lower courts have more women judges than men judges.

"Here without reservation there are 32 female judges and around 22 are male judges," Baghel added.
