SHILLONG: The Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA), in collaboration with Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) organized a training programme for Panel Lawyers and Para Legal Volunteers to respond to cases of Foreign National Prisoners in Custody and Child Care Institutions, and Prisons, through a Webinar, on the 24th July, 2020 at 9:50 am.
The training programme was attended by Panel Lawyers and Para Legal Volunteers of the District Legal Services Authorities, Superintendents and Jailors of Meghalaya prisons, NGOs, who are working closely with Foreign National Prisoners, Panel Lawyers of the High Court Legal Services Committee, District Child Protection Officers of Meghalaya and students of Shillong Law College. In the training session, the topics on Foreign Nationals in prisons, Foreign National in Child Care Institution and Refugees and Asylum Seekers in Detention were discussed. The biggest challenge faced while dealing with Foreign Nationals in Prisons or Child Care Institutions is to identify their country of origin and repatriation.
The training programme was organized for capacity building of Panel Lawyers and Para Legal volunteers of the State of Meghalaya so that they are better equipped to respond to the issue relating to Foreign Prisoners in custody and Child Care Institution and Asylum Seekers in Detention.
