GUWAHATI: Hailstorms accompanying gusty winds hit the outskirts of Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya and this resulted in damaging houses and trees being uprooted earlier on April 14.

As per source, huge damage has been reported from the Umiam area of Meghalaya, wherein the GS road area has also been affected after several uprooted trees blocked the highway.

In turn, the GS road or Guwahati- Shillong Road in the National Highway No. 34 has been completely blocked by trees and currently movement of vehicles has been stopped.

Apart from trees uprooted near the highway, extensive loss of properties has also occurred in the Umiam block during extreme weather conditions in the area.

Meanwhile, it is also reported that numerous villages in the Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya bordering the neighbouring state of Assam were also severely affected following the gusty winds with heavy rainfall.

Massive damage to properties including both private and public reportedly occurred in several affected areas. However, no case of injury or loss of life has been reported.

Earlier this week, the weather department IMD (Indian Meteorological Department) predicted heavy rainfall and thunderstorm in the northeastern regions including Meghalaya.

Moreover, the IMD weather forecast also stated about widespread rain with lightning in Meghalaya and as per the current prediction heavy to very heavy rain is likely till Saturday 16 April over the region.

In its concern over the weather in Meghalaya, the weather channel has also issued an orange alert for Thursday 14 April and Friday 15 April in the state.

Notably, the northeastern state of Assam is also experiencing continuous rainfall since the past few weeks. The same weather condition is likely to be witnessed by the people of the northeastern region in the upcoming days as per the IMD report.
