SHILLONG: A joint body of truck drivers, suppliers, exporters, traders and transporters of Meghalaya has alleged that illegal weighbridges have been set up along National Highway-6 and National Highway-40E and demanded that the unlawful structures be dismantled at the earliest. It has sought the intervention of chief minister Conrad Sangma in this regard.

The body (known as the joint committee of truckers, suppliers, exporters, traders and transporters' association) has written a letter to chief minister Conrad Sangma seeking necessary measures.

It stated that they take the responsibility of delivering essential commodities to the remotest corners of the country and as such their job needs a lot of effort and is at the same time very important for the state and nation's economy. Such is their job that they have to work continuously for months without even meeting their families and children. Also they had to risk their lives during the Covid-19 pandemic, it said.

It said they ensure that essential commodities reach each and every corner of the nation so that people do not suffer from problems (which would happen if the commodities do not reach the states on time), but they have to face various difficulties in Meghalaya because of illegal weighbridges which have been set up at many locations along NH-6 and NH-40E. Whenever they pass through the weighbridges, they have to give a huge sum of money and this is making their lives miserable on the roads in Meghalaya, it said.

Further, the body stressed that the matter be treated seriously by the Meghalaya government and necessary action be taken to dismantle the illegal weighbridges at the earliest.
