SHILLONG: Synshar Kupar Roy Lyngdoh Thabah, the United Democratic Party candidate won the Sohiong seat of the Meghalaya Assembly in the recently conducted by-polls for the constituency. The by-election for the Sohiong Constituency of the state of Meghalaya was conducted on Wednesday and the counting of the votes began on the morning of Saturday. The elections in the constituency were earlier postponed because of the untimely demise of the United Democratic Party candidate for the constituency.
United Democratic Party presented Synshar Kupar Roy Lyngdoh Thabah as its candidate in the election. He managed to grab a total of 15796 votes out of the total 30000 plus votes, which accounts for over 51 per cent of the total number. His nearest competitor was Samlin Malngiang fielded by the ruling National People’s Party. He managed to get about 40 per cent of the votes, which was a total of 12475.
United Democratic Party member HDR Lyngdoh had collapsed during one of the election campaigns in his constituency days ahead of the polls for the 60-member Meghalaya state assembly that was conducted on February 27. As a result, voting and counting for a total of 59 constituencies were conducted on a fixed date and Conrad Sangma-led National People’s Party retained power for another term. The voting was held on 3,328 polling booths, of which 1,100 were identified as sensitive and 28 as critical.
The voting conducted in the Sohiong constituency by-polls saw a massive 91.87 per cent turnout on May 10. A total of 34783 votes were cast across 63 polling stations of the constituencies. Officials with the election commission mentioned that the turnout was higher compared to the previous years.
Meanwhile, counting is also going on for the Karnataka assembly polls, where the Indian Nation Congress is heading towards a massive victory in the first half of the day.
