SHILLONG: A 17-year-old boy, and resident of Nongmynsong here, lost his life in a road mishap at Umkdait in Nongmynsong here on Saturday. The accident happened at around 7.40 am.

Police informed that the accident took place when the Yahama Scooty (B/R ML 05 R 8831), driven by the boy, along with a pillion rider (also of the same age group), while proceeding from Nongmynsong Bazaar towards Itshyrwat dashed against a Maximo Cab (B/R ML 01 6940) which at that time was picking up passengers on the side of the road. The cab was parked on the opposite direction. It was informed that the rider was not wearing any helmet when the accident happened.

When asked how an underage driver was allowed to ride, Police said that the parents were not aware that their son had gone to Ishyrwat, adding that the scooty did not belong to any of the family members and that it belonged to a friend of the deceased.

The scooty rider succumbed to his injuries as he was being taken to the NEIGRIHMS Hospital. An inquest was conducted; however, post mortem was exempted following requests from the deceased's family members.
