GUWAHATI: To encourage and support the start-up, incubation and development of innovation-led, high growth knowledge based business in the multi-disciplinary area of biotechnology, the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the Guwahati Biotech Park (GBP) in the presence of Union Minister for Education Dharmendra Pradhan, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, State Health & Family Welfare and Science and Technology and Information Technology Minister Keshab Mahanta and Education Minister Ranoj Pegu.
On behalf of USTM, the pact was signed by its Vice-Chancellor Prof GD Sharma, while on behalf of GBP it was signed by Kailash Karthik N, Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup (R) and CEO, Guwahati Biotech Park. The MoU was signed on Friday, 20th May, stated a press release.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof GD Sharma said, "The MoA will provide better opportunities to collaborate in developing technology based on various herbs found in North-East India. The students, scholars and faculty members will be benefitted. Joint projects and training in the field of biotechnology will be planned in emerging areas to create ecosystem of incubator and start-ups."
As per the MoA, the two institutions will focus on internship/training programmes for students, exchange of resources between both the organizations in the form of guest faculties/resource person etc., create a Knowledge Sharing Platform to support each other on various activities and events, conducting Sensitization Workshops across North-East India on Entrepreneurship and Start-up Ecosystem and Biotechnology by both the organizations.
Guwahati Biotech Park is the first Biotech Park in the North-East and is a joint initiative of Government of Assam and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India.
