SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has said that the State is committed to complete vaccination of people above 45 years of age in a week's time. The announcement by the Chief Minister came amidst the surge in COVID-19 cases across the State in the past few days.

Speaking to newsmen here on Wednesday, Conrad Sangma stated, ''We have around six-and-half lakh of population above the age of 45. We are determined to finish the vaccination target in one week." He also added that he has already had a discussion with the Deputy Commissioners to draw up their plans for execution of the vaccination process within the stipulated time frame.

Stressing the importance of community participation in arresting the spread of Coronavirus in the state, Sangma urged the masses to cooperate with the adminstration and the Health workers in this regard.

While schools in Shillong have been already closed till May 3, the government, on Wednesday, decided to close all colleges in and around Shillong till May 3. However, online classes will be permitted.

Meanwhile, gymnasiums, swimming pools, gaming parlours, salons, and bars will be shut from the April 23 till April 30. Non-essential shops will remain closed from April 26 to May 2. The government offices will operate with only 33% of staff strength.
