Voting Draws to an End for Meghayalaya and Nagaland Assembly

SHILLONG: Voting officially came to an end in the states of Meghalaya and Nagaland at 4 PM on Monday, but the voters who were still waiting at their respective polling stations were allowed to cast their votes.

While the state of Nagaland had a fairly good number of people turn up at their polling stations, the public of Meghalaya did not seem to follow the trend. With the official reports that were released by the Election Commission at 3 PM, the total turnout was mentioned to be 73.65% and the same in Meghalaya was 63.91%.

The numbers are expected to increase slightly as one more hour was left till the official closing time and few polling stations had voters waiting for their chance event at 4 PM. Postal votes from the employees engaged in different election-related works as well as the votes of the aged citizens whose votes were taken at their homes will also push the numbers up. But the numbers of both states are considerably lower compared to the state of Tripura which went to polls on February 16. Tripura had recorded a nearly 90% voter turnout at the polling stations to select their representative.

Meghalaya had recorded a 26 % voter turnout till 11 AM while 35% was recorded for Nagaland. The numbers increased to 44.73% and 57.06% respectively for Meghalaya and Nagaland assembly polls.

After casting their votes, the chief ministers of both the states of Meghalaya and Nagaland expressed their confidence in forming the government yet one more time. Neiphiu Rio had also appealed to the people of his state to maintain peace as well as law and order as the polling process goes on.

The necessary polling equipment will now be collected and stored in strong rooms till they are opened on March 2 for counting.
