SHILLONG: Minister of Labour, Sanbor Shullai recently met Union Minister of Labour and Employment Bhupendra Yadav in New Delhi and said that even though economic resources were limited, the people of Meghalaya were hardworking and predominantly confined to unorganized sectors such as domestic workers, home-based workers, self-employed workers or wage workers, taxi drivers, vegetable and fruitsellers.

As per the Supreme Court judgment dated June 29, 2021, the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India, created the National Data on Unorganized Workers (NDUW) portal for online registration of unorganized workers/ labourers for seeking help from the Central Government.

Shullai said that the Labour Department, Meghalaya would be leaving no stone unturned to ensure that maximum number of unorganized workers/ labourers were registered on the NDUW online portal. "We are also encouraging the unorganized workers/ labourers to obtain an Aadhar card, open a bank account linked to a mobile number for successful online registration. We will be educating the unorganized workers/labourers about the benefits of JAM (Jan Dhan Yojana bank account, Aadhar card and mobile phone linked to the bank account), which has been introduced by the Government of India to facilitate Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to all the eligible unorganized workers/ labourers," he said.

In this regard, Shullai requested Yadav to consider a special economic package for the unorganized workers from Meghalaya who got registered under the NDUW portal as a mark of appreciation and goodwill gesture.
