SHILLONG: International Women’s Day was observed on Friday by the office of the District Social Welfare Officer, East Khasi Hills, Shillong, in collaboration with District Programme Office, ICDS Cell, East Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi districts at Mawlai Mawtawar, Shillong, on the theme “Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change”.

Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills District, M War Nongbri graced the celebration as the chief guest in the presence of P Suchiang, District Social Welfare Officer, East Khasi Hills, IR Kharshyndong and K Nongdhar, Rangbah Shnong and secretary, Mawtawar and members of women organizations.

Speaking on the occasion, War said Meghalaya being the matrilineal society, women play an important role to educate, nurture and guide children especially by providing emotional support to teenagers.

Reminding that the family plays a crucial role in society, War said women should make their children aware about crimes against women and urged the society at large to treat women with equal respect and dignity by starting from their own homes.
