World Day Against Child Labour Observed In Meghalaya

SHILLONG: Sumarlin Lamare Coordinator of “Ferrando Ray of Hope”, informed that despite of the Right to Education (RTE) Act, many children below the age of 14 years are yet to be enrolled in schools in the city. Lamare, informed that, “Ferrando Ray of Hope” which works in about 10 localities of Shillong city, found out that 115 children are yet to be enrolled into schools.

Speaking at the programme to commemorate World Day Against Child Labour, the Coordinator of “Ferrando Ray of Hope” also expressed concern that schools do not give free and compulsory education as envisaged in the RTE Act.

Lamare said, “Even text books, uniforms and writing materials should be provided free of cost.”

She also said that not only SSA schools but also government aided schools should enroll students under the RTE Act.

The Coordinator also said that as per the objective of Directorate of School Education and Literacy (DSEL) is to provide free and compulsory education for all children of age group 6-14 and to eradicate dropouts among others.

She also said that the “Ferrando Ray of Hope” which is working for school dropouts in the city has found out that as per survey there are 166 children who opted out of school.

“We have mainstreamed 98 of them into formal school in collaboration with the SSA,” Lamare added.
