SHILLONG: On the occasion of World Oral Health Day, an Oral Awareness Programme was celebrated in the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGR-IHMS) by the Department of Dentistry. The celebration started with a radio talk on Oral Health awareness over All India

Radio on March 20 by Dr Nathaniel Kharumnuid. On Wednesday, an Awareness Run was organized with a 2.5 km run for MBBS and Nursing students. The Run was flagged off by the Director of the Institute Prof Nalin Mehta. The winners in both male and female category were awarded with certificates and medals.

This was followed by an awareness program in the OPD foyer area in NEIGRIHMS. Prof (Dr) Nalin Mehta, Dean Prof Asima Bhattacharya, Medical Superintendent Prof C Daniala, Prof & HOD Department of Dentistry Prof S Vijay Singh and Dr Lomtu, Assistant Professor, Department of Dentistry, graced the occasion.

Prof Mehta emphasized the importance of Oral Health and also the role of

Oral Health in other systemic diseases. He also mentioned the ill-effect of tobacco on Oral cancer. He also stated that consuming of tobacco is not only harmful for the health but also has a deleterious effect to the surrounding environment.
