Shillong: Meghalaya’s efforts to crack down on the drug menace yielded another success here. In a joint operation by the Intelligence Unit of Assam Rifles and the ANTF, a large quantity of Yaba tablets were seized at the Umshyrpi bridge in Shillong. According to the SP of East Khasi Hills, the ANTF team received input on November 20 that one person – Pinak Das would hand over a big consignment of Yaba tablets in Shillong.

However, Das kept on changing the delivery point from Upper Shillong to Sohra and again back to Shillong. After a long cat and mouse chase, Das was caught at around 5.30 pm near the Umshyrpi bridge. On search of his scooty bearing registration No. ML05L-9706, a plastic bag containing Yaba tablets was recovered. The quantity seized came out to be 1.915 kg or 1,915 grams.

It is to be noted that Das is merely an agent of a big drug lord named Bashkembor Nongbet who handed over the drug to the peddler on the curve of Shillong Peak, Upper Shillong, informed the police. Nongbet, however, managed to give police the slip taking advantage of darkness. He is a business partner in a Mawkyrwat based import-export company and belongs to Sohryngkham. His house was raided in middle of the night but his sister didn’t tell the police about his whereabouts.

Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills district, Claudia A Lyngwa has expressed faith that he will soon be captured. A case has been registered against both the accused vide Lumdiengjri PS Case No. 129(11)19 U/S 22 (c)/29 NDPS Act.
