238 Houses Damaged in Mizoram by Winds and Rains Triggered by Mocha

AIZAWL: Cyclone Mocha caused heavy rains and extensive damage in the Northeast Indian State of Mizoram. The trail of damages left behind in the wake of the cyclone included homes of the local people as well as refuge cams in the state.

According to the reports from the state disaster management and rehabilitation department officials, as many as 236 homes were damaged by Cyclone Mocha. Eight camps hosting refugees from the neighbouring country of Myanmar were also destroyed by the cyclone. 27 houses were mentioned to be fully damaged, 127 as severely damaged and 82 as partially damaged.

The official reports mentioned that a total of 5789 citizens from across 41 villages and towns of the state were affected by the adverse weather. Atleast 708 refugees from Myanmar were housed in the eight refugee camps were also affected. They had to be shifted to safer places because of the destruction of the camps.

The southernmost district of Mizoram, Siaha, which shares a border with Myanmar is being called the worst hit by the cyclone. Over 2599 people from 24 villages have been told to be affected by the same. Lawngtlai district, which shares a border with both Bangladesh as well as Myanmar has been said to be the second worst affected district of the state. A total of 2204 people in eight villages are said to be affected by heavy rain and winds. 396 refugees from Myanmar were affected in the district as three camps were damaged by the cyclone.

The Lunglei district was also affected by the disturbance with 187 people from eight villages facing problems after the cyclone.

The state government is preparing an estimate regarding the damages caused by Cyclone Mocha in the state of Mizoram.
