After Manipur Covid Delta Variant Found in Mizoram, 2nd State in Northeast

Aizawl: After Manipur, the Delta variant of coronavirus has been detected in the northeastern state of Mizoram.

According to reports, Mizoram reported four cases of the highly infectious variant, also known as B.1.617.2. The Delta variant has been detected in four COVID-19 patients in the Aizawl district. Their samples were sent along with others to the National Institute of Biomedical Genomics in West Bengal.

Meanwhile, World Health Organisation chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan said that the Delta variant, which was first identified in India, is becoming the dominant variant globally because of its significantly increased transmissibility.

The Delta variant is now being reported in about 80 countries around the world. "The whole situation is so dynamic because of the variants that are now circulating and... the Delta variant is well on its way to becoming the dominant variant globally because of its significantly increased transmissibility," Ms Swaminathan said at a press briefing in Geneva yesterday.

On June 18, N.Biren Singh, Chief Minister of Manipur, turned to social media to convey the grim news about the COVID-19 catastrophe that his state is experiencing as India continues to combat the advent of the second wave of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The CM has confirmed that the new Delta variant of the novel coronavirus has been traced in Manipur.

An examination of 20 samples from Manipur in a laboratory in Hyderabad revealed that 18 were of the Delta strain. More samples are now being examined, according to the Manipur CM.

The Delta variation has been designated as a 'variant of concern' by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States, he added.

The Delta form is considered more transmittable, more virulent, and causes more difficulties among people among the many mutations that the COVID-19 viral infections are widespread in the country. According to reports, this variation was discovered in India and has been designated as a 'variant of concern' by the WHO.

The Delta Variant, which traces its origin in India, is responsible for 99 percent of all COVID-19 cases in Britain, which reported 33,630 cases within a single week.
