AIZAWL: In more successes in
the crusade against smuggling activities, joint operations by personnel of the
Serchhip Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles — under the aegis of Headquarters
Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) — and the Customs Preventive Force as
well as the Excise & Narcotics Department of Champhai district led to the
recovery of areca nuts and also heroin worth crores in Mizoram. Both the operations were carried out based on
specific information.
On April 24, a joint operation recovered 380 bags of areca nuts from the general area of Mualkawi Road in Champhai. The approximate market value of the recovered areca nuts is Rs 96,67,200. The Customs department seized the contraband items.
HEROIN SEIZED: Personnel of the Serchhip Battalion along with the Excise & Narcotics Department seized 987.8 grams of heroin (No-4) from the general area of Zote Kai Champhai on April 23.
The approximate market value of the narcotics is Rs 4 crore, The Excise & Narcotics Department has seized the contraband item.
The ongoing smuggling of drugs is a major cause of concern for the State of Mizoram, especially along the India-Myanmar Border. Assam Rifles — also christened as the 'Sentinels of Northeast' — have continued their efforts against the smuggling activities in Mizoram, stated a release.
