Assam Rifles recovers areca nuts worth Rs 1.56 crore at Champhai in Mizoram

CHAMPHAI (Mizoram): In yet another success in its crusade against smuggling activities, Aizawl Battalion of Headquarter 23 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of Headquarters Inspector General Assam Rifles (East), recovered 40,000 kgs (Approximate) Areca Nuts worth Rs 1.56 crorein General Area Khuangphah, Champhai district on 22 Oct 2021.

The operation was carried out by a joint team of Assam Rifles and Customs Department , Champhai based on specific information. The approximate cost of the recovered Areca Nuts is Rs 1.56 crores. As the Customs Department Champhai, Dist Champhai seized the contraband items on October 22, 2021for further legal proceedings, stated a press release. Ongoing smuggling of Areca Nuts is a major cause of concern for the state of Mizoram, especially along the India-Myanmar Border. Assam Rifles, rightly christened as the 'Sentinels of Northeast' have continued their efforts against the smuggling activities in Mizoram.
