Assam Rifles seized foreign cigarettes worth over Rs 2.34 crore in Champhai district

AIZAWL: In yet another success in its crusade against smuggling activities, Aizawl Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of Inspector General Assam Rifles (East), recovered foreign origin cigarettes worth Rs 2,34,72,900 ( 78,333 packets) in the Khuangphah area of the Champhai district on Saturday.

The operation was carried out by a team of 2 Assam Rifles on specific information, stated a press release.

The seized cigarettes were handed over to the Customs Department at Champhai for further legal proceedings.

PLANTATION DRIVE: Meanwhile, Headquarter 23 Sector Assam Rifles, under the aegis of Inspector General Assam Rifles (East), carried out a 'Tree Plantation Drive' to celebrate World Environment Day at the 23 Sector Assam Rifles campus here Aizawl on Sunday, stated another press release.

A total of 700 saplings, including varieties of fruit-bearing trees and flowering plants, were planted on the occasion. A total of 140 Assam Rifles personnel participated in the event.

The aim of the drive was to spread awareness about the importance of tree plantation and how it has a direct impact on our lives. The world is facing many environmental issues such as air pollution, water pollution and degradation of forests. All this has resulted in increasing green house gas concentrations, rising land and ocean temperatures, melting of ice, sea level rise and extreme weather conditions.
