AIZAWL: In three separate incidents, the Assam Rifles has seized drugs (heroin and methamphetamine tablets) and foreign cigarettes valued at over Rs 5 crore which were smuggled in from neighbouring Myanmar.

According to a press release, the Serchhip Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of Inspector General Assam Rifles (East), recovered 226 gm of heroin worth around Rs 1.33 crore in the Zokhawthar of the Champhai district on Wednesday.

One person was arrested in this connection, while two women were arrested in connection with the seizure of the methamphetamine tablets.

Earlier, Assam Rifles personnel recovered 165 packets of foreign cigarettes, valued at Rs 2.25 crore, from an abandoned house at KhawbungTlangsam (Zokhawtharalong) in the bordering Champhai district.

In a separate raid, 58,000 methamphetamine tablets, valued at Rs 1.74 crore, were seized from Chawlhhmun in the Aizawl district on Monday night.

The seized items and arrested persons were handed over to Customs officials for further action.

The Mizoram Police, at a public function on Friday, set afire 934 kg of seized drugs valued at Rs 2,362 crore, including heroin and methamphetamine tablets.

Besides various illicit drugs and bottles of cough syrup, other contraband like gold, foreign cigarettes as well as arms and ammunition are often smuggled from Myanmar to contiguous Northeastern states, especially Mizoram and Manipur, through their unfenced borders.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT: Meanwhile, the Lunglei Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of Inspector General Assam Rifles (East), conducted a 'Skill Development: Farming Technique' at Tuipang Town on Wednesday.

A total of 30 local farmers attended the lecture. The aim of the lecture was to spread awareness amongst the local farmers about the new techniques and methods of farming in this terrain. Various government schemes for farmers were also discussed in the programme. The locals of Tuipang town were very happy and expressed their gratitude for the initiative taken by Assam Rifles.
