NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Railways, Government of India has mentioned that the railway project to connect the northeastern state of Mizoram to the rest of the country will be over soon. This project once completed will mark the dawn of a new era in terms of communication and commerce, especially in the Northeastern Region of the country.

Sanctioned long back, the Bairabi-Sairang Rail Line Project aimed to create an additional 51.38 km of railway track in Northeast India. 65% of the project had already been completed in August 2019 itself. An inspection was carried out by the Chairman of the Railway Board in February 2020. But the Covid-19 Pandemic caused severe delays in this project since then. Multiple hurdles have been faced in the construction of the track because of lockdowns and a lack of labours for the job.

Adverse weather conditions in the region are also a major cause of delay in this project. In an accident that took place at a railway construction site in Manipur earlier this year, several labours were killed and many more injured. A major landslide had buried the camps with several labours still inside. Several army personnel were also injured in this accident.

The initial cost of the project was estimated at Rs 2384 Cr, but with time this amount was also revised to Rs 5021.45 Cr. And the deadline was also extended to March 2023, with 82% of the work completed by the end of November 2022.

This project comes under the Northeast Frontier Railways zone of the Indian Railways and aims at seamless railway connectivity to the capital of Mizoram. The landmark project has 130 bridges 23 tunnels and four stations as part of its plan. The four stations to be developed are Kawnpui, Hortoki, Mualkhang, and Sairang in Mizoram of Northeast India.
