AIZAWL: Tawnluia, the Deputy Chief Minister of Mizoram announced that all rural households in the region will have access to potable drinking water by December 2023.
The state administration is putting in all efforts to provide tap water connections to a number of 700 villages under the Jal Jeevan Mission, Tawnluia added. The announcement was made by the deputy CM on Thursday.
He further informed that, as of now all houses in 263 villages have been offered tap water connectivity under the scheme. The process is done through Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTC) under the mission. The minister mentioned 465 more villages which needs to be provided with the facility.
The state government is constantly making efforts to ensure that all houses in all the villages gets access to this amenity by the end of this year, the minister added. Jal Jeevan Mission is a scheme which was introduced by PM Narendra Modi in 2019, on the occasion of Independence Day.
The prime mission of JJM is to provide access to drinkable water to all households through the help of FHTC. PM announced the completion of the scheme by the year 2024. Tawnluia highlighted the fact that, even though PM has set the deadline of 2024, the Centre has advised the state administration to cover the scheme and wind it up by the end of 2023.
While replying to questions raised by MNF members regarding the scheme, Tawnluia asserts that, he is not certain whether the government will be able to succeed in implementing the scheme in the allotted time period or not.
As per the reports, Mizoram has provided drinking water facility using solar pumps to eleven villages. The state government is taking up measures to offer the service in 175 more village through these solar pumps.
Nevertheless, the Deputy Chief Minister also mentions that plastic material of pipes are being used instead of metallic pipes for connection of the water supply. This was directed by Centre, the minister said.
