AIZAWL: The Assam Rifles and the Champai Police carried out an operation on the border area between India and Myanmar in the state of Mizoram. And this operation led to the recovery of a large amount of explosives.

The security forces undertook this operation in the general area of the Old Vaikhawtlang Track Junction in Champhai. And were able to apprehend a total of four people including two citizens of neighbouring Myanmar during the operation carried out on July 11. The security forces were able to capture 100 kilos of gelatin, 50 kilos of ammonium, six bundles of safety fuze, 636 detonators, 28 rounds of 12 bore cartridges and Rs 75000 in cash. They also seized a Maruti Suzuki WagonR bearing registration number MZ 01 SJ 0799 as well as two Kenbo two-wheelers.

The officials mentioned that the operation was taken based on intelligence received by the Assam Rifles and the recovered materials along with the apprehended individuals were handed over to the Champhai Police Station of Mizoram to proceed with the investigation.

Previously a statement from the defence PRO said forces received information that miscreants were attempting to smuggle weapons to strife-torn Manipur via Nagaland. Acting on the tip-off, a joint operation was launched by the Assam Rifles and the Kohima Police at 2 a.m. on June 26. "Assam Rifles spotted a passenger vehicle and kept it under surveillance. At 6 a.m., the teams jointly searched the vehicle," the statement further added. "A total of 11,00 arms, 13,702 rounds of ammunition, and 250 bombs of different kinds have been recovered so far. Flag marches, area dominance, cordons, and search operations are continuing in various parts of the state," a Manipur police statement said.

The violence in Manipur is over two months old now and has seen over 100 deaths.
