AIZAWL: Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga, who is also the president of the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), expressed his unwavering confidence in his party's ability to retain power in the upcoming state assembly polls scheduled for November 7. He went on to declare that the MNF would secure more than 25 seats in the election.
Zoramthanga made these remarks after filing his nomination for the Aizawl East-I constituency. During his conversation with reporters, he emphasized that the primary opposition party, the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), presented a more significant challenge to the MNF than the Congress.
The MNF chief was not only determined about his party's performance but also stated that he anticipated winning by a larger margin than in the previous assembly elections. Zoramthanga's confidence seemed unshaken as he spoke about the electoral contest.
Furthermore, he addressed the allegations made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who had accused both the MNF and ZPM of being tools used by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to gain a foothold in Mizoram. Zoramthanga strongly refuted any such connections and stated that the MNF had no links with the RSS. Instead, he clarified that the MNF's association with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the central level was solely due to their choice not to align with the Congress.
In an attempt to establish the MNF's distinct identity, Zoramthanga made it clear that his party's ideology set it apart from the BJP, and they did not come under the influence or control of any other political group. He sought to dispel any misconceptions or associations that linked the MNF with the BJP.
Zoramthanga, who is seeking his fourth term as the Chief Minister of Mizoram, will contest from the Aizawl East-I constituency. His main opponents in this electoral battle include the ZPM vice president and former legislator Lalthansanga, Congress nominee Lalsanglura Ralte, and Lalruatfeli Hlawndo of the Zoramthar group.
The Mizoram state assembly elections, which will determine the composition of the 40-member assembly, are slated to occur in a single phase on November 7. The counting of votes will take place on December 3, with the recent Friday marking the deadline for filing nomination papers. The scrutiny of these nomination papers is scheduled for the following Saturday, and candidates have until October 23 to withdraw their candidature. The electoral landscape in Mizoram is heating up, with politicians and parties making their intentions and positions clear as the polling day approaches.
