Mizoram: Drugs Worth Over Rs. 20 Crores Recovered

AIZAWL: In a significant success in the war on drugs in the North East, drugs worth over Rs. 20 Crores was recovered in Mizoram.

Based on specific inputs, a joint operation was undertaken by a team of Assam Rifles and the Anti-Narcotics Department of Mizoram Police at the outskirts of Sialsuk village in Mizoram's Aizawl district on Tuesday. The security agencies had inputs of a probable drug smuggling attempt.

A statement issued by the Assam Rifles read, "Based on the information received, a Mobile Vehicle Check Post (MVCP) was launched by joint team of Aizawl Battalion and Special Narcotics Police Station, Aizawl at Sialsuk, on 8 Nov 2022."

It added, "The team noticed the movement of suspected vehicle at around 4pm. The vehicle was stopped and a thorough spot checking was carried out."

In the operation, as many as 70,000 methamphetamine tablets weighing 6.37 kilograms were seized. Not only that, but 342 grams of heroin concealed in 25 soap cases were also recovered during the same operation.

If the value of the entire seizure is considered, its total worth will be around Rs. 20 crores in the market.

According to Mizoram Police, a four-wheeler was intercepted based on prior information. On searching the vehicle, the contraband substances were found inside a bag.

The joint team of the Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police's Anti-Narcotics Department have arrested two persons for allegedly smuggling illegal contraband. One of the arrested was the driver of the vehicle.

The arrested duo has been identified as Lalhim Puiya and Changchunga, both residents of Lawngtlai District of Mizoram.

It may be mentioned here earlier on October 21, Mizoram Police seized illegal contraband total worth of which was over Rs. 28 crores. In the operation which was conducted in multiple locations across Champhai district of the state, 5 grams of heroin was recovered within 24 hours.

In a similar operation conducted in September, drugs worth over Rs. 84 crores in the international market were seized from Champhai district.
