Mizoram: ECI Orders Repolling in Aizawl South III Constituency Due to Election Irregularities

AIZAWL: In a significant development, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has taken the decision to order re-polling at one specific polling station in Mizoram's 20-Aizawl South III (ST) Assembly Constituency. This decision was prompted by reported irregularities in the election process.

The ECI has set the date for the re-polling at the 13-Muallungthu polling station on November 10, scheduled to take place between 7 am and 4 pm. This move reflects the ECI's commitment to ensuring the integrity and fairness of the electoral process in Mizoram.

The Election Commission of India has directed the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Mizoram to oversee the execution of the re-polling at the mentioned polling station. The CEO has been instructed to take all necessary steps to conduct a fresh poll, with the utmost transparency and adherence to electoral norms.

The decision to order re-polling followed the submission of a detailed report by the Returning Officer for the 20-Aizawl South III (ST) constituency. This report highlighted irregularities that took place during the assembly elections in Mizoram, which concluded on a recent Tuesday.

In the notice issued by the ECI, the CEO of Mizoram has been tasked with ensuring that the re-polling process is widely publicized. Various methods, including the beating of drums or any other convenient means, will be employed to inform the public in the polling station areas about the upcoming re-polling. This ensures that voters are aware of the opportunity to cast their votes again in a fair and transparent manner.

Additionally, the CEO has been directed to provide guidance to the Returning Officer responsible, as well as to election observers and district election officers. This collaborative approach aims to guarantee the proper conduct of the re-polling process and to prevent any further irregularities.

During the recently concluded Mizoram Election 2023, the state witnessed a voter turnout of approximately 77.73 percent. This participation rate reflects the engagement of the electorate in the democratic process. Voting in the state began at 7 a.m. and continued until 4 p.m. Across Mizoram's 1,276 polling stations, over 8 lakh (8,50,288) eligible voters exercised their democratic rights.

Data from the Voter Turnout app revealed that Serchhip district recorded the highest voter turnout at 84.49 percent, followed closely by Mamit district at 84.23 percent and Hnahthial district at 84.16 percent. Among the assembly constituencies, Tuikum-27 stood out with the highest voter turnout of 87.32 percent.

The decision to order re-polling underscores the ECI's commitment to upholding the principles of free and fair elections, ensuring that every voter's voice is heard and every vote counts. It serves as a reminder of the vigilance exercised to maintain the integrity of the electoral process in the state of Mizoram.
