AIZAWL: An operation against the narcotics peddlers of the region led to the seizure of heroin worth more than Rs 1 Cr in the capital of Mizoram. The team was also able to apprehend two citizens of Myanmar in relation to the captured consignment of narcotics.

The initiative was a joint operation between the Assam Rifles and the Anti-Narcotics squad of the Excise and Narcotics Department. The team was able to seize a total of 191 grams of narcotics from the possession of two foreign nationals of Myanmar hidden in 15 soap cases by the suspects.

The value of the captured 191 grams of narcotics is said to be around Rs 1,33,70000 or one crore thirty-three lakhs and seventy thousand rupees.

As the state governments of Northeast India tighten the control on narcotics smuggling and selling around the region, large consignments of narcotics are captured almost every day. Previously the Serchhip Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles, under the aegis of Inspector General Assam Rifles (East), recovered three hongs and two small plastic vials of Heroin No. 4 worth Rs 35.77 lakh in the general area of Zote, Champhai, on June 24. The operation was carried out by a combined team of Assam Rifles, Excise, and Narcotics Department Champhai based on specific information. The recovered items have been handed over to the Excise and Narcotics Department in Champhai for further legal proceedings, stated a press release.

And before that, the police seized a large number of contraband drugs worth Rs 17 crore in Mizoram's Mamit district, informed officials on Sunday. The two accused have been identified as Md. Idrish Miah (36) and Khugon Das (28). According to Mizoram police, "Based on secret information, Mamit police on duty at a highway junction on June 23 night intercepted a car driven by Md. Idrish Miah of Tripura." During the search, the police team recovered and seized 270 soap cases containing 3.47 kg of heroin, valued at over Rs 17 crore in the international market, concealed in a secret compartment under the vehicle. A case has been registered under sections 1(c), 25, 29 ND, and the PS Act.
