Aizwal: Panic gripped the northeast region as Manipur become the first state in the region to report COVID-19 variant omicron. However, so far no cases of omicron have been reported in the other parts of the region.

In the latest update, Mizoram is still free from the omicron variant and this was confirmed by the State nodal officer of Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and official spokesperson on COVID-19 Dr Pachuau Lalmalsawma.

According to a national news agency, Dr Lalmalsawma claimed that the two returnees have come from Australia and Singapore recently and tested negative for the omicron variant.

They were diagnosed with COVID-19 on their arrival at Lengpui airport in Aizwal and their samples were sent for genome sequencing to the National Institute of Biomedical Genomics in West Bengal's Kalyani on December 22.

The results came out negative on Monday.

Meanwhile, informing the new variants of COVID-19 like delta and others are still prevalent in the state, Dr Lalmalsawma urged people to strictly adhere to COVID-19 appropriate Behaviour (CAB).
